sister, sister

30 10 2006

my sister and i are polar opposites…she is hyper, happy-go-lucky and giggle-y, where i tend toward the somewhat laid-back, sarcastic and snicker camp. my theory is that i balance her. that is not to say that i am not a happy person or that i do not giggle, i do. but especially when she is around my demeanor becomes the yang to her yin. here is the conversation that i had with my sister (a non-knitter) the other day…(for effect, imagine her speaking a zillion miles an hour)

me: hi, sis…

sis: hi tan-tan…hey are you going to make ashley and ally some fingerless gloves too?

me: so you got your (belated) birthday present? did you like it?

sis: the girls really want their own pair of gloves. and it would be cute to have matching scarves…

me: so did you like the gloves?

sis: ashley loves pink right now…and ally is obsessed with yellow.

sis: …oh, yes! i’m going to use them when i play tennis. and the girls want some too…{insert chatter here}

as i’ve said before, i DO miss my sister but i often come away from our phone calls a little frustrated. even though we live on opposite sides of the continent, we are still sisters and have the ability to drive the other crazy. for the record, i conceded and said i would try to knit the girls something before we see each other in las vegas. but can i say this:

ps – i did buy some encore (read: sturdy and machine-washable, something i should have used for my sis) to make them some scarves and fingerless gloves…but now i’m uninspired to knit. i’ve looked through a million patterns and googled a bunch, but i can’t get excited about it. do you have any suggestions?

pps – i’m stalking the mailperson. i’m still waiting for the CTH supersock and….my STR sock club kit!!

ppps – sorry no pics today….but i promise to post if my packages arrive!!!

sockin’ molly (september 2006– frogtober 2006)

photo edit by df (thanks, babe)

best known for her ability to inspire the irish in all, molly could dance a jig that would make a leprechaun jealous. her twisted ribbing made us laugh and cry. she had a troubled life; rousing fits of complaints to her propensity to bleed onto hands and the fact that, well, she was JUST SO GREEN. molly will be most remembered and missed by those of “the unnamed sock club” of columbus, oh. she leaves behind two center-pull balls destined for over-dyeing.

mamluke (july 2006 – frogtober 2006)

photo edit by df (thanks, babe)

until his ill-fated end, there was never any doubt the character and strength of mamluke. to him, there was only black and white (er, cream) – never any shades of gray. his intentions were clear: to bring two-color knitting to the lives of all knitters. unfortunately, his loose floats led to his ultimate demise. mamluke is survived by his primary cousins, red, blue and yellow.

they will be sorely missed.

what a bummer.

socktober wasn’t completely a bust. i did come away with some sock yarn!! i am anxiously awaiting some CTH mill ends won from ebay in a blindingly brilliant green, and…

my banner comes from the same photo session!

have a good thursday…send some caffeine thoughts for my night shift tonight!

long overdue pictures…

25 10 2006

first of all, i know that you are dying to see the new toilet seat that df has purchased for our master bath. (apparently our current seat is only 3 years old, yet there is a crack on the hinge-y part. when df tried to fix it, the other side cracked as well. this led, of course, to the extensive search of toilet seating, materials, cost, hardware, shape, etc. etc. really, it is fascinating). may i introduce to you {dramatic pause}…..our new toilet:

manny has graciously obliged to being the spokes-model (she says she deserves the spotlight, rather than the toilet seat)

note the graceful lines of the brushed nickle hardware

manny’s outfit is all the rage with foot models. here you see the avant-garde stylings of cookie a., creator of the pomatomus pattern from knitty. did you notice the sharp metallic details that jut out artfully from the garment. genius!! just genius!! here is a close up for the fashion editors.

started: frogtober ?, 2006

in news outside of toilet seats…after much frogging and tinking and such…i have finally finished demi. ok, that’s a lie. i have finished a sleeve of demi.

demi from vintage knits by rowan

100g / 160 m ; 100% wool
started: frogtober 2, 2006
needles: kp options #6 & #7 (so far)
changes: no bobbles!

this sweater is going to be warm!! and i mean warm. i just drape the thing over my arm and i immediately feel a difference in temperature. all you warmer-blooded peeps, take note of this if you don’t like to get overheated in your sweaters.ok, i think that’s enough for today.

may you be lucky enough to survive frogtober unscathed.

24 10 2006

i have decided to rename this month from ‘socktober’ to ‘frogtober’. at least for me. poor manny got her hopes up because of the three sock projects on the needles, two bit the dust. one still remains but i must tink back a couple of rows since i mussed up the pattern. what’s worse is that i have no pictures to show for it.

{insert picture of kinky yarn and naked needles here. yuk-yuk.}

i have gotten a little progress on demi done. i promise that pictures will be on the way. with yarn that color, one must wait for natural light…cross your fingers it will be sunny tomorrow. 🙂

on a brighter note, i leave with you a picture that nicely illustrates why i love my df so much.

what other man would spend hours researching toilet seats in such detail? (and yes, he puts the seat down EVERY time). love you, babe.

a message…

12 10 2006

manny wanted me to let her write as a guest blogger today. [who is manny? remember this? (df decided that this was a good name for her.)] i was happy to oblige.

dear blogland,

i write to you with a heavy heart. i have been so lonely these past couple of months. my life-long goal has been to bring the joy of hand-knit socks to the world. but as of late, i have not been able to answer my calling – my destiny, even. i spend many days just gazing out the window.

since this was socktober, i anticipated the gloom and dreariness of non-sock-dom would lift. but alas, sometimes i just lay on the couch all day….

today, i decided to take a stand. even if i’m not DOING what i’ve worked for since i was just a “little piggy”, i can still send my message by TELLING the world how i feel. i just wanted to let you know that YOU should celebrate socktober, even if *some people*, and i’m not naming names or pointing toes, aren’t celebrating as much as they should. please hear me!! go find that perfect pattern, splurge on that special yarn and KNIT SOCKS!!!

me? don’t worry about me. {sigh}

…i find ways to pass the time.

p.s. – incidentally, i’m looking for work if you know anybody.

happy socktober!!

4 10 2006

today is, what, the 4th of socktober and i have yet to think about socks. bad tani. anyway, let’s start socktoberfest off with a bang!! i’ll celebrate the sock-a-li-cious month with my SOCK HISTORY!!

  • when did you start making socks? did you teach yourself or were you taught by a friend or relative? or in a class?

i started making socks early in my knitting life. before i knew better, i shopped at joann’s for yarn. but even yarn lust can come early-on for the new knitter. a ball of lb simple stripes caught my eye. it was blue and stripe-y and it was such a happy color!

  • What was your first pair? How have they “held up” over time?

i made my first pair with the pattern from the ball band. i was soooo hooked on socks. it was amazing. i stayed up late to knit. i even snuck my sock knitting to work so i could get a few rows in. i still wear that very pair of socks. then are mostly soft and somewhat piling, but still very nice looking. in fact, i wore them to work on my birthday. if you look closely at this picture, you can see my socks in the left corner of the picture. i ripped them off the moment i saw my present so that i could take pictures of my mannequin foot fully clothed.

  • what would you have done differently?

i made them a little small, but i like snug socks. and the toes are all jacked up, i somehow didn’t center the stitches when doing the decreases and forget about the kitchener stitch! the toe is passable but still wonky. despite the imperfections, i still love them.

  • what yarns have you particularly enjoyed?

my fav is cherry tree hill supersock. love, love, love it. i totally abuse my socks: wear them to work (i’m a nurse – always on my feet!), throw them in the washer and dryer (mostly by accident), etc. but it wears well, is super soft and is a dream to knit up! i’ve recently been introduced to socks that rock, too (i joined the club but only knit one of the skeins and not in the pattern!!) it’s awesome…i don’t particularly like self-striping yarn anymore, but if the color is right and the yarn is yummy, i’m game for anything!! i guess i just like them all.

  • do you like to crochet your socks? or knit them on DPNs, 2 circulars, or using the Magic Loop method?

i prefer dpns. my ebonies are far and above my favorite. i still like and use my metal dpns that i bought along with the yarn from my first socks. i’ll use 2 circs just to mix things up. never tried magic loop, nor crocheted socks, but i’m willing to try anything once.

  • which kind of heel do you prefer? (flap? or short-row?)

either, love them both

  • how many pairs have you made?

dunno. more than 20, less than 30.

  • how many patterns are on your to do list?

at least 20, not counting the patterns in my books. i’m obsessing about cables recently. eunny’s bayerische is high on my list.

last night, when i started my “things to do tomorrow list” i penned “sock planning”. (yes, i am a geek like that. i plan to plan. now actually completing my task list, well that’s another story. on a good day i get about 90% of the things i list done. on average i finish 60%. somehow i rationalize that “more than half” is a good thing.) i also thought to write “no demi knitting” but couldn’t bear the thought. i think i jinxed myself; i found a cabling mistake and had to rip 6 rows back. i’ve put it away and will now start the sock knitting.

here i come molly!!

(for your picture pleasure, i have included photos of the wrap-job i did on rita’s fetching fingerless gloves. done in the natural plymouth suri merino). hope you like them reet!
